Spring gardening tips

Spring is finally here. After months of chilly weather, snow, and ice, it’s time to get back outside and enjoy the warmer weather.

One great activity many Seniors enjoy is gardening. It’s relaxing, peaceful, and provides a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it’s a great way to spend some time outdoors.

Here are some modification tips for seniors with limited ability to make the most out of their garden.

1. RAISED BEDS:

Raised planting beds allow for easier access than ground-level plantings, especially important for those who are older and may have a harder time bending over and stretching across the planting area. Some not-so-obvious benefits of raised beds include better drainage and aeration, lower risk of pests and better weed control.

2. SITTING:

Along with the raised bed, a stool or chair will help alleviate strain and stress from working on your plants. Many great ones are available that include storage for tools and materials. It’s important to look for those that have wheels that will operate on the surface you’ll be working on. You’ll be going up and down the rows with ease.

3. TOOLS:

Two things to think about with your gardening tools: handle length and color.

A longer handle allows for easier access to the entire garden without stretching and reaching with the shorter variety. Choose tools with bright colors (or paint them yourself) to easily locate and retrieve.

4. OTHER:

If you are going to be out in the sun, remember to drink plenty of water, wear a hat, and USE SUNSCREEN. Even on a cool day, the sun can have negative effects on your skin. Especially skin that is exposed for the first time in months.
